Renate Thor

Trondheim, Norway

Renate Thor is a Trondheim-born, Oslo-based illustrator, artist and graphic artist. She is known for her playful artworks and illustrations, using bold colours and compositions. She is driven by the process of her craft, allowing it to guide her to the result through free and playful experimentation. She works with screen printing for her artworks, using paper stencils and bold colored ink to create her unusual compositions. She loves the unpredictability of layering and blending in screen printing techniques, and imitates some of the same principles in her illustration work. Renate is a graduate of Westerdals School Of Communication, and has an MA in illustration from Oslo National Academy Of The Arts.

One flock, four moods

Renate Thor is a screen printer first, and it shows. She builds her compositions with paper stencils and boldly coloured ink, chasing the unpredictability of layered printing, and her Birdie series is that method distilled: one tumbling flock of cream birds, packed edge to edge until it reads as pattern, printed across four different grounds. Petrol blue, dark chocolate, emerald and rose pink each change the temperature of the same drawing completely. Trondheim-born and Oslo-based, Thor trained at Westerdals and holds an MA in illustration from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

Choosing a Birdie is mostly a question of what the room already does. Birdie Blue is the coolest and most classically Scandinavian, at home in a living room that leans blue and grey; Birdie Brown warms to wood and leather; Birdie Green freshens a kitchen or hallway; Birdie Pink is soft enough for a bedroom or nursery. And because all four share one composition, they were made for hanging in pairs: two colourways side by side turn a single print into a small series.
